In 2022, my colleague Trishna Senapaty and I started the Abolitionist Anthropology Working Group. We aimed to connect scholars doing diverse anti-carceral work as activists, prison educators, university instructors, and researchers. The group has grown to include a virtual network of scholars and practitioners in universities and research institutions across North America and beyond.
We recognize the ways that our institutions actively contribute to carcerality, including through on-campus policing; gentrification and displacement of over-policed communities; and the neoliberal drive toward surveillance and punitive justice.
For early and late-career graduate students, researchers, tenured and untenured faculty, with differential access to institutional power - this group is a platform to provide mutual support and brainstorm how we can direct university resources towards de-carceration and prison abolition.
